Alla la Daaro offers a range of activities including individual or group classes
in local arts and crafts.

Beekeeping
Alla
la Daaro houses a number of beehives and regularly produces pure organic honey
and is also now making wax candles and body lotion. An experienced beekeeper
from the Gambian Beekeeping Association is available should guests wish to learn
about beekeeping in The Gambia.

Bird Watching
Many
species of birds found in the Field Guide to Birds of The Gambia reside in or
around Alla la Daaro, some permanently and others seasonally. The Wooden Deck is
a great spot for bird watching as is the back of the kitchen after lunch!

|
Brikama
Brikama town lies approx 2/3 kilometres
from Alla la Daaro and is accessed via foot, bicycle, donkey cart or local taxi.
Brikama market is a large local market selling all daily needs, materials, a
wide variety of fabrics, clothing, foods etc. It is best to take a guide with
you in order to negotiate prices and pass freely through the maze of stalls.
There are many tailors trading in the town and any fabric bought can be made
into clothes and other items e.g. bags, of your choosing.
Brikama hosts a famous Craft market now situated in purpose built workshops on
the outskirts of the town. Here you will find wood carvers, local ‘jembe’ drum
makers and other crafts people who will be happy to discuss their work.

Bush Safaris
Paths lead out of Alla la Daaro into the village and surrounding bush where
various other paths are maintained making it possible to explore the local
environment including the close by villages of Marakissa and Mandua. There is
also a nice back walk to Brikama which takes approximately one hour.

Community Engagement
Bakary Sambouya village always welcomes visitors who are invited to visit the
village Alkalo (head of village), the large UK sponsored village nursery school
and health clinic, football ground, women’s community garden etc
The village also has a large community minibus which is available for private
rental (with driver).
Community volunteers are welcome to stay at Alla la Daaro at a discounted rate.

Cooking
An
African dish is prepared every day at Alla la Daaro and guests are welcome to
assist in the preparation and the cooking of this. They are also welcome to
visit the local market in Brikama for the daily food shop.

Cultural Programmes
There
are regular cultural programmes both in town and the surrounding villages and
these can also be arranged at Alla la Daaro. (see Music).

Dance
Each
tribe has its own form of cultural dance and children learn this from an early
age. Bakary Sambouya is primarily a Jola village where women love to dance and
take great delight in sharing their art. Representatives from the Fulla,
Mandinka and Wolof tribes are also available to teach their form of dance.

Donkey Rides
Donkey
rides through the forest via two or three other villages, with a village boy,
his donkey and a cart, can be arranged and have proved a favourite with guests.

Tailoring / Tie Dye
Brikama
market sells a wide range of brightly coloured fabrics including tie dyed waxed
cotton. Tie dying is traditionally done by the Serahule tribe and Serahule
families have long been resident in Bakary Sambouya plying their trade from
Brikama up river to Basse from where they originate.
All sheets (drapes) and curtains (rideaus) at Alla la Daaro have been made from
local tie dye and guests can order fabrics during their stay. Classes in tie dye
can also be arranged. and a local tailor is available to make your material into
clothing\bed linen etc.

Wood Carving
Brikama is well known for its wood carvers who can be found working at
the back of their Craft Market and a good tutor is available to teach the local
techniques.
